Beeswax lunch wraps

During term 3, Room 11 and their buddy class; Team 8 discussed how we could
make a difference and help our environment.

After much discussion, we decided that we could help by stopping using plastic
wrap in our lunchboxes and use an alternative like a Beeswax lunch wrap.

We had to research how to make them and find out what we needed.
Mrs Nelson ordered the beeswax pellets all the way from Geraldine and Mrs Turner sourced the material and pinking shears.

Next we had to work out what size the lunch wrap needed to be and measure them
out on the material - this was trickier than we thought!

After using the pinking shears to cut out the lunch wraps we got busy making them with our buddies - this was the fun part!

Watch our slideshow to see how we made them.

SVA Community Guardians

This term, Team 5 are volunteering their services by taking part in a community project. We are in the 'Get Thinking' stage of the inquiry process, where we need to FIND the perfect project we can go forth and make a change in a community with.

We are interested in hearing from our families and friends and the wider community to find out what they think would be a good project for us to do for our community.

Please feel free to comment with any ideas you or your family come up with below. Let's make a change together!

Fractions & Pizzas

As part of Maths week, Room 11 have been looking at fractions so what better way to put our learning to use than to measure, mix, make and share our pizzas among our group.

There were some very yummy and interesting creations, but all were devoured and enjoyed by the budding chefs. Well, mostly!

Take a look at our delicious creations below.

Making music with Ti Rakau sticks

Room 11 spent the afternoon learning to follow the song
and patterns using ti rakau sticks.

First we made the ti rakau sticks by rolling newspaper or magazines tightly
and sellotaping them together.

Next we had to break the song down into patterns and learn each pattern separately before them altogether to perform the song. Some patterns were harder
than others, but we got there!

Watch our awesome performance below.

Harold comes for a visit!

This week Harold from the Life Education can came for a visit to teach us what things impact our decision making and what a good leader looks like.

First we had to complete a group challenge and un-tangle ourselves without letting go of each others hands. It was tricky but lots of fun!

We learnt about making choices and what influences our decisions.
We had to choose to go to LA, the Gold Coast or Queenstown and make lots of decisions during the morning when we were given new information about each place.

We talked about what a good leader looks like and what attributes they might have.

Then we got to meet Harold and tell him about the things we learn't.

Harold told us a funny joke...

Why was Harold running around the bed at night?

Because he was trying to catch some Zzzzzzz's....!

Lest we forget

Room 11 spent the week learning about and commemorating ANZAC day.
Mrs Waite bought in some special items that belonged to her husbands grandfather who fought in a war.

They were really interesting, and it was great to hear a real war story.

This a cup that had lots of engraving about the war on it.

This was a certificate that the soldier received after the war and a shaving kit that soldiers had to carry with them during the war. It even still had the soap!

Next... we made ANZAC biscuits. Yum!

We had to work in small groups and work out the quantities by
halving each ingredient.

This turned out to be tricky and some biscuits tasted a little bit better than others, but we still enjoyed them!

Delicious!!

Goodbye from Room 11
